Diamond painting is a relaxing craft where you use a wax-tipped stylus to press small faceted resin gems onto a sticky, numbered canvas, one colour-coded symbol at a time. When every section is filled, the design glitters like a mosaic. No artistic skill is needed. Read our full guide
Start with round drill. It is faster to place, more forgiving for beginners, and the finished result is just as beautiful. Square drill tiles together with no gaps for a seamless mosaic look, but requires more precision. Try it after you have completed two or three round drill kits.
Start with a 30x40cm kit. It is large enough to produce a finished piece worth displaying, and small enough to complete in a few sessions without losing momentum. Avoid very small beginner kits under 20cm as they do not show the craft at its best.
Pull the old wax out of the pen tip and reload by pressing it firmly into the wax pad for 3 seconds. Also check that your drills are face-up in the tray (flat top facing up). A face-down drill will not seat on the pen tip correctly.
A small 20x30cm canvas takes roughly 3 to 8 hours. A medium 40x50cm takes 15 to 30 hours. A large 60x80cm can take 40 to 80 hours across several weeks. Most crafters work in 30 to 90 minute sessions and find it deeply habit-forming.

Sealing is optional but recommended for any piece you plan to display long term or give as a gift. Use a brush-on diamond painting sealer or matte Mod Podge in two thin coats. Skip sealing if you are framing behind glass, as the frame protects the drills and sealer can slightly dull their sparkle.
The "5D" refers to the 5 facets on each resin drill: a flat top and four angled sides that create the prismatic sparkle effect. It is a product term rather than a technical standard. Virtually all modern diamond painting kits use 5D faceted drills.
Paint by numbers is a guided painting kit where the canvas is pre-printed with numbered sections and each number matches a specific paint colour. You fill in the sections with a brush, and a detailed painting builds up in front of you. No drawing experience needed.

Streaking usually means the paint is too thick or applied too fast. Let the first coat dry fully, then apply a thin second coat in smooth, even strokes. For light colours over dark areas, two coats are almost always needed for solid, streak-free coverage.
Apply a second coat of paint once the first is completely dry. Light colours over a white or printed canvas almost always need two coats. If numbers are still visible, mix your paint with a tiny amount of white to increase opacity before the final coat.
